Better Government Association to hold debate on term limits

July 14th, 2010 . by admin

In the spirit of voter education, we are passing along an invitation to an upcoming debate about term limits.  (Please note, the Naperville Voter Education League is not affiliated with the Union League Club of Chicago or the Better Government Association.)

The Better Government Association (BGA), in partnership with the Union League Club of Chicago’s Public Affairs Committee, invites you to attend a debate on term limits featuring Professor Dick Simpson, Chair of the Department of Political Science at the University of Illinois at Chicago and Dawn Clark Netsch, Professor of Law Emerita at Northwestern University School of Law.

Professor Simpson, who served as Chicago’s 44th Ward Alderman for two terms before retiring in 1979, will argue in favor of term limits as a reasonable way to check the power of long-serving officeholders. Professor Netsch, who served in the Illinois State Senate before being elected as State Comptroller in 1990, will argue against term limits as an arbitrary restriction on the ability of citizens to choose whether to retain elected officials.

The program will be moderated by BGA Executive Director Andy Shaw. We will begin with breakfast service at 7:30 am, followed by the program at 8:00. Following presentations by our featured speakers, we will open the floor for a lively question and answer session with our audience.

Please join us for this timely and important discussion! For reservations, please contact Barbara Macholz at the BGA at (312) 821-9025 or by e-mail, bmacholz@bettergov.org. The cost is $25 per person.

Please note: the Union League Club of Chicago maintains a “business casual” dress code, defined as a collared shirt/blouse and slacks/skirt (no jeans).
